ESPN REPORT: The two standout Indiana Hoosiers Basketball players have been suspended after it was discovered that….
The NCAA suspended 7-foot center Peter Jurkin and 6-foot-8 forward Hanner Mosquera-Perea for the first nine games of the current season on Tuesday. They will also have to donate a percentage of the advantages they received—which were considered impermissible—to a charity of their choosing.
The players’ AAU coach, Mark Adams, gave them $9,702 and $6,003 in plane tickets, food, lodging, a laptop computer, a telephone, and clothes, according to enforcement officers at the governing organization. Mosquera-Perea has to reimburse about $1,590. For Jurkin to be restored, he needs to return $250.
In a statement released by the NCAA on Tuesday night, the league claimed that both players were eligible to receive the benefits from the nonprofit that Adams utilized to assist foreign players in obtaining travel documents and paying for their expenses to the United States. The issue wasAdams’ $185 donation to the Varsity Club between 1986 and 1992 was another reason he was viewed as an Indiana booster, even though boosters are not allowed to provide players privileges.
Adams has previously represented former Indiana basketball player Tijan Jobe in an eligibility challenge involving an additional $2,655.
“Despite the minimal nature of Mr. Adams’ donations, and the fact that the last donation he made was more than 15 years before he provided expenses to a prospective student-athlete who enrolled at the institution,” the NCAA stated in its letter to the institution. “Mr. Adams must be considered a representative of the institution’s athletics interests.”
After taking into account these secondary infractions, the NCAA gave the university credit for implementing “substantial and meaningful” corrective measures. These included severing ties with Adams, paying a $5,000 fine for improperly certifying one participant before to his competition, and distancing the program from Adams.
