Damien Harris, a former Alabama running back, leaves the field in an ambulance after suffering a neck injury.

In the second quarter of Sunday night’s game against the New York Giants, Buffalo Bills running back Damien Harris sustained a neck injury. The team reported that Harris was transported by ambulance to a hospital for further testing.

According to the Bills, Harris can move his arms and legs.

Following halftime, Bills coach Sean McDermott stated on NBC’s Sunday Night Football broadcast that he was unsure of Harris’s current condition.

When Harris was being loaded into the ambulance, he gave a thumbs up with his left hand. After being tackled by linebacker Bobby Okereke on a 1-yard gain up the middle to convert a third-and-1 situation, he lay motionless on his back on the turf for a few minutes.

Okereke seemed to take a direct hit to his left shoulder from Harris’ helmet. Players from both teams crowded around him on the field, causing the game to be delayed for approximately five minutes.

Trainers and medical personnel from the Bills hurried from the sidelines to tend to Harris in front of a silent, capacity crowd at Highmark Stadium. With lingering thoughts of Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin’s near-death experience in January following what looked like a routine tackle, Bills players watched with worried expressions on their faces.

But on January 2, during the first quarter of a game in Cincinnati, Hamlin went into cardiac arrest and needed to be revived on the field, requiring CPR. Harris was placed on a board and rendered immobile without the need for CPR.

When Harris lifted his thumb to get into the ambulance, everyone cheered.
