The NHL suspended forward Andrew Mangiapane of the Calgary Flames for one game for cross-checking forward Jared McCann of the Seattle Kraken during the first period of the Flames’ 6-3 victory over the Kraken on Saturday night in Seattle. Cross-checking resulted in a five-minute major penalty for Mangiapane, who later received a match penalty.
The 27-year-old native of Toronto has no past disciplinary record.
Mangiapane is expected to miss the Flames’ upcoming game on Tuesday night at Scotiabank ledome, when they will play the Nashville Predators at home.
Magi pane has now received two suspensions this season, the first being teammate Rasmus Anderson, who was given a four-game suspension for allegedly charging Columbus Blue Jackets forward Patrick Lain.
Magi pane fired a shot in the offensive zone and then cross-checked McCann. The forward for the Krakens stopped Mangiapane’s opportunity and laid the puck on the ice. McCann’s head slammed the ice after Mangiapane struck his neck and upper back. Mangiapane argued, as per the Department of Player Safety, that he had no intention of “driving McCann’s head into the ice.” Despite taking a brief break from the ice, McCann played for more than 11 minutes in total.
