Jay Harbaugh is supposed to leave Michigan football for an NFL position, but he did not wind up moving to Los Angeles to follow in his father’s footsteps.
Jay is anticipated to be traveling even further north on the West Coast. The Seattle Seahawks, led by first-year head coach and former Michigan defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, are reportedly close to landing the former Michigan special teams coordinator on a contract, according to Albert Breer of the NFL Network.
It was assumed that Jim’s son, along with defensive coordinator Jesse Minter and strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert, would follow him to coach special teams when he left Michigan to join the Los Angeles Chargers, shortly after the Wolverines won the national championship.
Instead, Macdonald—who coached defense at U-M in 2021 before moving on to coach the Baltimore Ravens in 2022—will be Jay’s coach when he signs with the Seahawks. Jay, 34, is anticipated to work under Macdonald. Along with Ben Johnson of the Lions, who ultimately decided to stay there, Macdonald immediately became one of the most sought-after names in the coaching cycle.
Jay, who worked for his uncle John as an assistant for the Ravens from 2012 to 2014—including a stint as a quality control coach in 2014—will be making his second NFL stint. After leaving the NFL to work for his father at Michigan, where he lasted nine seasons as an assistant, he became the Michigan assistant with the longest stay in the previous campaign.
Jay played many different jobs at Michigan, but he was always involved with the special teams coaching staff. Jay has been Michigan’s special teams coordinator since 2020. He has also been the position coach for safeties (2022–23), tight ends (2021), and running backs (2019–20). He assisted with running backs (2015–16) and tight ends (2017–18) in addition to his role as assistant special teams coach prior to taking on the role of coordinator for special teams.
