He will not take Corbin Burnes’ place. However, the Milwaukee Brewers are about to add a free agent who performed well in his sparse starting role last campaign.
According to those briefed on the talks, the organization and right-hander Jakob Junis have agreed to a one-year, $7 million deal, subject to a physical. With a $3 million buyout on a mutual option, Junis, who will earn $4 million this season, may be a contender for the starting rotation, providing the Brewers with yet another option.
The Brewers now have a rotation led by Wade Miley and Freddy Peralta after Burnes was traded to the Baltimore Orioles last week. Candidates to start include DL Hall, obtained in the Burnes trade; Joe Ross, another free agency addition; and Colin Rea, who re-signed.
In his 40 appearances for the San Francisco Giants last season, Junis, 31, made just four starts. During those outings, he held opponents to a.114 batting average and.352 OPS while giving up zero earned runs in 12 2/3 innings. In 73 1/3 innings as a reliever, he posted a 4.54 ERA while opponents only batted.292 with a.831 OPS.
Junis played with the Kansas City Royals from 2017 through 2021 before joining the Giants for the previous two seasons. During his first three seasons, he was almost exclusively deployed as a starter, recording 61 combined starts in 2018 and 2019 with an adjusted ERA that was somewhat below the league average.
Junis was predominantly employed as a starter by the Giants, who signed him as a free agency in March 2022, but in 2023, he was primarily utilized as a reliever.
